WGBH Stories form the Stage

What does it mean to grow up black in America? In part, it means strangers looking at you with suspicion; being pulled over by the police for no reason; being afraid to walk outside because of who you are. Tonight, storytellers share stories of living while black in a country too often divided by race. An interview and Q&A will follow each story.

Storypallooza2

A night of raucous, raunchy, hilarious, poignant, heartfelt stories by some of the best storytellers on the east coast. Hosted by Dan Foley, a Boston area juggler, comedienne, performer extraordinaire and performed by four amazing storytellers, this will be a night you pee yourself laughing, but one you will think about in quiet moments for months afterward. Most storytelling concerts and contests have themes. The theme for this evening is “Adults only” which certainly means don't bring the kids! But also means wear your thickest skin. But don’t worry. It will be dark enough so they won't see you blush.

On The Flip: I See Color

Counter Stories is a project of EmbraceRace, Good Talk Media, Valley Voices Story Slam, Amherst Media, and other partners in western Massachusetts that celebrates storytelling about race and identity. We’re working towards building a culture of storytelling that encourages individuals to share their stories about race more frequently, either in formal settings or online.

We’re particularly interested in connecting with storytellers from communities whose perspectives rarely appear in the public square, and supporting them to tell the stories they want to tell, rather than the stories we think we want to hear. Those can be stories of racism and oppression, bias and hardship; they can also be stories of joy, family, friendship and community, resistance, resilience, and laugh-out-loud humor.

All of these elements, and more, are important parts of the extraordinary fabric of race, racial learning, and caregiving we hope our growing community of storytellers will stitch together.
